About the ArtSci INDEX
An Enabler of Your Dreams
Ever since ArtSci'98
The INDEX has been germinating ever since ASCI produced its first international ArtSci symposium on collaboration in 1998. At that time it was difficult to find scientists to attend and even more difficult to locate those who might be collaborating with artists. However, at ArtSci2001, ¾'s of the artist presenters shared the podium with their collaborating scientists and/or technologists and by 2002, all presented together! That signals a major development in the growth of the new cultural paradigm of ArtScience practice.. The Internet has played a seminal role in facilitating multi-disciplinary collaborations, however, the Internet's rapid growth requires effective tools for researching its vast amount of information. Our dream is that the INDEX will become such a tool and more -- a friendly enabler of your dreams.
How the INDEX Works
[print for reference]
BROWSE:
1) You do not have to be Registered to use the "Browse" function.
2) This function allows you to preview Forms people have entered into the database for: "Have a Project/Seeking Collaborator" and "Have Skills/Seeking Project"... but you cannot see contact info.
3) Click on the word Browse in top navigation bar on this page. There are instructions on the Browse page about the various types of search options.
REGISTERED USERS:
1) Only Registered Users [free] have the ability to contact others in the online ArtSci INDEX database and can use our special "matching" function. Click Register in top navigation bar on this page.
2) After registering, you will be connected to your "Manage Account" page. This is where you can create, view, edit, add, and delete your information in the INDEX database at any time by logging-in with your User Name and password [created during Registration].
3) Begin by selecting one of the four "Types of Participation" Forms under Collaborate or Professional Services [work for hire]. If you do not fill-out any Forms, there is no point in registering.
SEARCH:
1) Registered members should use the Search function from their "Manage Account Page," [not on public Browse page].
2) This Search will provide a "Results List."
3) Click on each "Participation Form Code" in the List to read the detailed information on the Forms in the INDEX database. Only registered INDEX members can see personal contact information [if you selected that option].
4) Until the database is large, a broader Search will yeild more results. [read example below]
If you want to see all of the various types of technologists in the database: leave the Keyword window blank; select "Any" for "Type of Participation," select "Technology" from the "Field of Expertise" drop-down list, and then choose "Any" State and "Any" Country. OR, you might want to select one of the four Types of Participation but then choose "Any" for Field of Expertise. Give it a twirl and experiment!
MATCHING:
1) When the INDEX becomes a large, global database, the fastest way to find your most suitable potential collaborators, will be to use our special Matching function.
2) "Matching" can only be executed from your Manage Account page after you have registered, not from the public Browse page.
3) Click on the word "Match" [in top navigation bar]. This will display a list of all the Forms you have submitted to the INDEX database.
4) Click on the "Participation Form Code#" of the Form for which you want to find "matches."
5) When that specific Form's information is displayed, it will ask you if this is the Form you want matched. Click "YES." Then the matching function will search for those forms in the database that best match your requests or offerings.
6) You will be operating in a secure, password protected environment, and only you will be able to see your search results. You will be able to contact these individuals privately by clicking on the email note at the bottom of the matched page. [see Privacy Policy in User Agreement].
The purpose of the INDEX is to function like an art-science "matchmaker" and its responsibility stops there. At that point, YOU decide if and when you want to do something with the information that the INDEX database yields.
