 Tactile Appreciation 40" x 20" 7-color inkjet on matte paper October 2003
Rick Barry is Associate Professor of Computer Graphics at Pratt Institute. He has been an award-winning designer, art director and illustrator since 1966. He pioneered the use of computers for design and illustration in the 80s, published one of the first independent desktop-published newsmagazines, "MacTimes," and created the interface design for one of the earliest GUI-based internet systems. He is past Chairman of the Department of Computer Graphics at Pratt Institute, and the Dean's Coordinator for Media Convergence. Rick is Secretary of NYC ACM SIGGRAPH, and was Chair of the Courses Program for the SIGGRAPH 2003 conference. Rick's digital print work is schedule for exhibit at the Schaffler Gallery at Pratt Institute from January to February, 2004.
The work offered here reflects the artist's simple and direct view of the world in and around him. "Holding Pattern" seeks to offer a view of a self-imposed hesitancy or paralysis between a couple. "Tactile Appreciation" is pure expression of sensuality. "Make Art" is a sarcastic representation of the purist's view of new media art. It is also an expression of ambivalence about the idea, and the act, of creating art.
