Urban UFO: the HolyRoller

On Saturday, April 22, 2006, on the Noordzee Coast, Eric Staller, an American artist living in Amsterdam, launched his latest Urban UFO, "The HolyRoller". Staller is known for his series of URBAN UFO’s, mobile public artworks that he has shown worldwide; the most famous of which is the "Lightmobile," a Volkswagen Beetle covered with 1600 computer programmed light bulbs.

Staller has been working in secrecy on the HolyRoller for almost a year. The artwork is a giant cylinder, made of aluminum and rubber, that rolls along the beach, propelled by three men walking inside. Over and over, the roller impresses four religious symbols in the sand.

Says Staller; "My intent with the piece (and with all my work) is to ask more questions than I answer. You can interpret it in at least two ways: am I trying to unite these disparate beliefs; or am I symbolically trying to stamp out religion? When you look at the history of civilization you can see two sides of the same coin: magnificent art and architecture created in the name of religion; and mass destruction and genocide, also in the name of religion."
