  ARTIFICIAL EVOLUTION

    Carpio Jantzen
    Carpio kallos, Hybrid One

I don't set out to make a specific image; rather, I choose physical elements and locations that I feel have a curious affinity for one another. I then purposefully, place these elements together in ephemeral assemblages. My goal is to cultivate unexpected visual references with the potential to surprise. I photograph these set ups, then, using my computer, I layer, alter and manipulate the raw photos as I search for the new images within. This gradual development from a more simple form (original photograph) to a more complex form (my finished image) mimics the natural world of evolution; in this case an unnatural selection.

I am drawn to environmental themes of reproduction, growth and repetition. I am intrigued with surfaces...the exterior/visible, and how it manifests the interior...the hidden realm, that which is beneath the surface both physically and metaphorically.

Working digitally with my computer allows me to see in new ways; it affords me the opportunity of being surprised and inspired by the unexpected outcome.

In my current exhibition* [in which "Spawn" is included], I bring together images I created to evoke animated beings; made up life forms with personality.

* Exhibition at the OCCCA (Orange County Center for Contemporary Art), March 3 -31, 2007; Reception: March 3rd, 6:30-10:00pm.
